Why genetically improved treestocks are so important to your forestry investment

Information you'll find on this page:

How genetically improved treestocks can increase the value of your forest

The selection of appropriate treestocks is known to be a key factor in the final value of your forest.

As greater emphasis is put on growing trees for high-value end uses, it is becoming more important than ever to grow wood of a suitable quality for processing.

Since manufacturers require different wood property characteristics depending on the end use of their product, the ability to differentiate between tree breeds is now crucial. We also expect substantial price differentials based on internal wood characteristics in the future.

Prior to planting, PF Olsen can provide advice on the appropriate treestocks to suit your forest location, silvicultural regime, and targeted end-products or markets. There are many planting options to choose from including:

  • GF17 - 19 (open-pollinated) seedlings
  • GF22 - 30 (control-pollinated) seedlings
  • GF Plus Certification
  • Bare-rooted stoolbed cuttings
  • Bare-rooted field (aged) cuttings
  • Containerised cuttings
  • Containerised seedlings

As experts in the selection of treestocks we can help you select the best treestocks to maximise your forestry returns.

Where forest owners get the best treestocks from

PF Olsen believes that a commitment to the establishment of a superior product will ensure that you are in the best position for selling and marketing the final crop. This is why we have established a Pinus Radiata control-pollinated seed orchard in Marlborough to produce high quality control-pollinated seed.

As members of the Radiata Pine Breeding Company Limited, PF Olsen has access to the latest research results and parental selections in Radiata Pine breeding. The seed orchard is seen as a method of delivering the latest outputs from this research to our clients.

PF Olsen is in a position to deliver the genetics from our breeding knowledge to you via either a direct sale of seed (that you can have contract grown by your local nursery) or by directing you to nurseries that have purchased and grown PF Olsen seed.

The benefits of using containerised plants

For forest owners who want a low risk method to establish your forest, container grown cuttings and seedlings may be the best option for you.

PF Olsen Nursery Ltd is a wholly owned subsidiary of PF Olsen Limited and produces high quality, container grown cuttings and seedlings with superior wood quality characteristics.

The benefits of planting container-grown trees are:

  • A lower risk of establishment failure due to less transplant shock
  • Reduced risk of mortality in dry conditions
  • Less root disturbance at lifting, during transport and planting
  • Better development of vertical roots (sinkers)
  • Flexibility to plant outside the normal planting season
